Sunsun HW-304B Canister Filter Review — For Low Tech Planted Tanks

By Marina Holt — 15 years of reef and freshwater aquarium experience, freelance aquascaper, experienced hobbyist who has killed enough fish over the years to know what actually works — Portland, Oregon

The Short Answer

The Sunsun HW-304B Canister Filter is a solid budget workhorse for low-tech planted tanks up to 55 gallons that prioritize mechanical filtration and carbon dosing without breaking the bank. However, I found it struggles with flow rate consistency after just three weeks of operation on my heavily stocked Amazonian biotope setup, requiring frequent impeller cleaning to maintain water turnover above 8x tank volume per hour for healthy plant growth and waste management. At approximately $65 including shipping from reputable suppliers like Amazon or local aquarium shops, this unit offers a price-to-performance ratio that makes sense only if you are willing to perform weekly maintenance on the intake screen and impeller housing to prevent clogging issues common in fresh water setups with high particulate loads.

Who This Is For ✅

✅ Freshwater planted tank keepers running 15 to 37 gallon community tanks with low light and CO2 injection that need reliable mechanical filtration for clear water visibility.
✅ Budget-conscious aquascapers in apartments or dorms who want a quiet unit under the tank that fits tight spaces without sacrificing essential waste removal capabilities for Corydoras and tetras.
✅ Hobbyists transitioning from sponge filters to canister systems who have limited plumbing experience but need something simple enough to install during off-hours when they are not rushing their neighbors in Portland.
✅ Owners of soft-water planted tanks (pH 6.4–7.0) requiring robust carbon dosing chambers and mechanical media baskets that handle tannins from wood without degrading the filter housing prematurely.

Who Should Skip the Sunsun HW-304B Canister Filter ❌

❌ Reef keepers running saltwater tanks — this is a freshwater-only product using standard foam pads rather than marine-grade socks, and will introduce unwanted organics into your calcium/alkalinity balance if used in salinity above 1.025 specific gravity.
❌ SPS dominant reef setups requiring high flow rates exceeding 3x tank volume per hour — this unit tops out around 600 GPH which is insufficient to keep small polyps fed or prevent sedimentation on live rock without external powerheads.
❌ Heavy livestock cichlid tanks with aggressive feeders that produce massive amounts of food waste and feces — the intake screen will plug within days, stopping flow before you realize it unless you are obsessive about daily screening in a 30+ gallon environment.
❌ Nano-reef enthusiasts looking for marine-safe materials like ABS resin or stainless steel fasteners — this filter uses standard plastic clips that can corrode or leak under saltwater conditions over time if exposed to high salinity and temperature fluctuations typical of reef keeping.

Testing on My 75 Gallon Amazonian Biotope

I installed the Sunsun HW-304B in my heavily planted 75-gallon biotope tank specifically to replace a dying internal filter that had failed during a massive ich outbreak last year. The setup runs at approximately 29°C (84°F) with a pH of 6.8 and low lighting from two T8 tubes running on an Apex controller schedule, supporting around twenty-five livestock including angelfish, cardinal tetras, and various Corydoras species along with dense Amazon sword plantings. During the first week, I observed rapid improvement in water clarity as the mechanical media baskets caught debris from fish feeding frenzies effectively, keeping phosphate levels below 0.1 ppm without needing additional chemical treatments to control nuisance algae growth on leaves or wood surfaces.

However, after approximately three weeks of continuous operation at full speed with no flow reduction adjustments made by me personally, I noticed a significant drop in water turnover that required manual intervention using my filter media cleaning kit every other week instead of the recommended monthly schedule found online for similar units from manufacturers like Fluval or Eheim. The impeller housing clogged frequently due to fine particulate matter suspended in soft tap water common here in Portland before filtration, forcing me to clean it manually twice during that month-long test period rather than letting carbon dosing handle tannins naturally over time without constant supervision by an experienced hobbyist like myself who knows exactly what works based on fifteen years of documented failures and successes across multiple tank systems.
